Tension-free vaginal tape vaginal erosion and penile abrasion

Vaginal mesh erosion is an uncommon complication of tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) procedures. Many women who undergo placement of vaginal meshes are sexually active. Consequently, mesh erosions present potentially profound detrimental effects on coital activities. We present a case report of a 39-year-old multiparous woman whose partner noted severe dyspareunia and penile abrasions after the placement vaginal mesh secondary to both erosion and to resulting scar tissue formation. Mesh erosion was present after the placement of the TVT. Although no mesh erosion was noted with the TVT-outside (TVT-O), significant scar tissue was resected at the time of surgery. We recommend that patients be fully counseled as to the potential detrimental effects that vaginal mesh placement may have on patient and partner sexual function.
