Menstrual disorders are common in adolescence. When menses are unexpectedly heavy, it may be a sign of an underlying bleeding condition. While not all adolescents who present with heavy menses from men-arche will have an underlying diagnosis of a blood dyscrasia, these disorders are more common than previously thought. Recent prevalence rates are estimated at 5-20% for von Willebrand disease and 1-47% for platelet disorders in adolescents.1 These rates are considerable given the frequency with which teens and young women present to the gynecologist with menstrual problems.
