Assessment of Aspergillus flavus Isolates Derived from Seeds of Maize Varieties for Aflatoxin Production

Twenty nine isolates of A. flavus were collected from seeds of different varieties of maize. Only 13 isolates were found positive for aflatoxin production on SMKY medium. Eight isolates of A. flavus produced only B-1, two both B-1 and B-2, two B-1, B-2 and Gland only one produced B-1 and G(1.) None of the isolates was found to elaborate aflatoxin G(2). Aflatoxin B1 production was quantified and found to range between 38-690 mu g/l. Seeds of var. Kanchan was found to support the highest (420 mu g/kg) aflatoxin production whereas the lowest (110 mu g/kg) was recorded in seeds of var. pop corn when inoculated with the most aflatoxigenic Kan 2 strain that was isolated from var. Kanchan.
