Canadian National Railway's coal revenue was up 11 percent to 99 million Canada dollars (98.37 million US dollars) in the first quarter as higher rail rates helped the railroad offset fewer coal shipments. Revenue/coal carload was up 15 percent to 1,138 Canada dollars in Q1. Coal carloads were down 3 percent to 87,000 in the quarter. Tough winter weather in Q1 slowed railroad operations in the quarter, reducing traffic volumes and raising costs. "Extreme cold and snow affected us system-wide, particularly in Western Canada, delaying trains and putting crews, cars and locomotives out of cycle," said CEO Hunter Harrison in releasing Q1 results on April 21.
