Preparation and Mossbauer spectroscoplc characterization of iron oxide particles

A variety of ultrafine particles have received a great deal of attention as one of the advanced materials because they have unusual characteristics, which bulk materials do not possess. In the work reported here, we attempted to prepare the ultrafine particles of" iron oxide from pentacarbonyliron(O) by the chemical flame method. This method is one of the most common, techniques for preparing ultrafine particles [I], in which high temperature is attained with a relatively simple system. Several preparation methods have been employed for the ultrafine particles of iron oxide, but only a few have used pentacarbonyliron(O) as raw material [2, 3]. Surprisingly, a very limited number of investigations have focused on the Mossbauer spectroscopic characterization of ultrafine particles, although a number of studies have dealt with the thin film of metals, alloys and metal oxides [4]. Thus oi7Fe Mossbauer spectro-scopy was mainly used for the characterization of the ultrafine particles prepared by the present chemical flame method.
