Utility of gram stain of endotracheal aspirates on empiric therapy in children with hospital-acquired pneumonia

We read "Gram stain/aolc screening for detection of catheter related bloodstream infection"1 with great interest which demonstrated that Gram/AOLC screening has modest sensitivity and high specificity for the diagnosis of catheter-related bloodstream infection. Early and prompt diagnosis of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) is important because it leads to appropriate antimicrobial selections and decrease the morbidity and mortality of patients.
