The Social History

It was many years ago, but stayed with me. The words from a lost young mother with a baby on her hip. I was a new faculty member at the time, just out of fellowship and volunteering my pediatric services at a homeless shelter for women and children. The shelter was located just south of downtown, near abandoned lots that were not yet on the verge of gentrification. It was in the type of neighborhood where I had to call my husband upon arriving so he wouldn't worry about my safety.
