Effects of water-soluble Ca supplements prepared from egg shells and oyster shells were determined on growing rats. The aim was to determine the suitability of food wastes as materials for water-soluble Ca supplements compared to water-soluble Ca supplements prepared from imported seaweed powder. When animals were administered 3 types of water-soluble Ca supplements orally for 6 wk, blood Ca levels in the seaweed Ca supplement group were markedly higher than those of egg shell or oyster shell-derived Ca; however, blood alkali phosphatase activity, osteocalcin and urine crosslink levels were not different between the 3 types of Ca supplements. Bone mineral density and bone mineral content in spine, femur and tibia were not markedly different among the groups. However, body wt., bone mineral density and bone mineral content of the femur were markedly higher in the oyster shell Ca supplement group. Results suggest that, at least on a short-term basis, the effects of Ca supplements prepared from egg shell and oyster shell are similar to the effects of seaweed Ca supplements.
