A novel genetic risk factor for venous thrombosis.

A common genetic variation in the 3'-untranslated region of the prothrombin gene is associated with elevated plasma prothrombin levels and an increase in venous thrombosis. Blood 1996; 88:3698-703.Since the early 1980s our group had been interested in the molecular basis of familial thrombophilia. We studied families with a history of thrombosis to learn about the association between venous thrombosis and abnormal plasma phenotypes. Through these studies, hereditary deficiencies of the anticoagulant proteins antithrombin, protein C, and protein S were discovered.
