The choice of an appropriate breeding procedure for the development of high-yielding cultivars depends on the nature and magnitude of genetical variation with respect to yield-contributing characters. A study was undertaken to understand the combining ability of yield and quality components to combine high yield with quality. Three Gossypium hirsutum genotypes and 3 introgressed lines, obtained by crossing G. hirsutum and G. arboreum species and inducing polyploidy by colchicine treatment, were used. The general combining ability variance was greater in magnitude than the specific combining ability (sca) variance for all the traits, indicating preponderance of additive gene action. Crosses, which recorded high per se performance, also registered high sca in general. The parent MCU 12 was observed to be an ideal parent for improving boll number, boll weight, single plant yield, ginning percentage, uniformity ratio and bundle strength among the hybrids. Six hybrids were found to possess positive sca effect for single plant yield.
