Bupropion XL for the sustained treatment of trichotillomania

Evidence-based psychopharmacologic treatment of trichotillomania has been limited to a handful of conflicting randomized controlled trials, open-label studies, and case reports. Although moderate efficacy has been reported with serotonergic anti-depressants and other psychotropics, such as typical antipsychotics and anticon-vulsants, evidence from open-label studies suggest that treatment response may not be maintained over time. One case report exists on the effective treatment of trichotillomania with bupropion for 12 weeks, but to our knowledge, longer-term efficacy of this drug for this condition has never been reported. Herein, we report the case of a patient with trichotillomania who, after multiple failed trials of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), responded rapidly to bupropion XL 450 mg/d with sustained remission for the last 24 months.
