The reduction of carbonyl groups by sodium borohy-dride is well-known in the field of organic chemistry (1,2).This reaction is found in most organic lab texts (3-5) and commonly uses ethanol,a relatively environmentally friendly solvent that is biodegradable.The only difficulty for an instructor adopting this reaction in a student lab course is the reaction time necessary to reduce the carbonyl group can be as long as the lab period (2-4 hours) and usually another lab period is needed to complete product analysis.
