Greening Up Auto Part Manufacturing: A Collaboration between Academic and Industry

Integration of both green chemistry principles and real-world collaborative projects into chemical curricula have proven to generate student enthusiasm and interest, while providing a means to foster the development of sound chemical knowledge, problem-solving ability in the laboratory setting, and communication skills (1-7). Described here are the nature and results of a collaborative partnership between the depar tment of chemistry at Maryville College (MC) and DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, Inc., that afforded MC students an opportunity to conduct the research necessary to "green up" the industrial processes at DENSO. Projects were initiated during an analytical chemistry course when students met with DENSO associates to discuss pressing green chemistry research problems. During the semester, students designed and performed preliminary experiments and drafted a research proposal that was submitted by the instructor to DENSO. Funded work was completed under the supervision of the instructor as part of a summer research program, and results and recommendations were included in a final report to DENSO. To facilitate the establishment of similar collaborations by other institutions and industries, additional details of two representative green chemistry projects are presented, as are the positive outcomes to the environment, students and faculty at Maryville College, and DENSO associates.
