Lest we forget: Heparin-induced hyperkalemia

HEPARIN IS used widely in intensive care, yet the awareness of its adverse effects, other than bleeding and thrombocytopenia, remains generally poor. An example of heparin-induced hyperkalemia (HIH) after administration for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is presented. This is a rare but serious complication of heparin therapy. The renal physiology leading to HIH and the options available for its management are reviewed.
