Recent economic uncertainty has produced unexpected benefits and new opportunities across the supply chain. Every year has its up and downs, but coining as it did on the heels of a major global financial crisis, no doubt everybody was hoping for a little better - at least calmer - 2011. Instead, a rolling insolvency crisis in Europe put a crimp in late 2010's rebound in global trade, and then came a cascading series of events - both natural and man-made - that seemed tailored to test the mettle of shippers, third-party logistics (3PL) firms, and supply chain management providers. What can be said about a year in which a critical player in the world clean-tech manufacturing sector – Japan - is hit by a triple whammy of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster?
