A feeding trial was conducted to study the effect of a canola oil and animal (beef) fat-coated commercial diet on the growth and survival of hybrid red tilapia (mutant pink nile tilapia tilapia niloticu male x wild blue tilapia tilapia aureus female)juveniles for seven weeks. The commercial diet was coated with two different concentrations (5% and 10%) of oil and fat and fed ad libitum to hybrid red tilapia three times (09.00,13.00 and 17.00 h) daily. One control group was maintained, and they werefed with the same commercial diet without any coating of oil or fat. During the experimental period, water flow was maintained at 0.5 L/min. The water salinity ranged from 0.5 -1.4 ppt and the temperature was 28° C. One hundred percent survival was noticed in 5% oil and 5% fat, and the control diet followed with 93.3% survival in 10% oil and 73.3% in 10% fat enrichment. But in terms of growth, 10% oil enrichment produced a better specific growth rate (SGR; 0.8053% d~(-1)), than 5% oil (0.7493% d~(-1)),10% fat (0.7257% d~(-1)), 5% fat (0.7110% d~(-1)) and the control diet (0.7012% d~(-1)). The best food conversion ratio (FCR; 1.11) was also achieved in 10% oil enrichment. A statistically significant difference (p< 0.05) was noticed between the controldiet and 5% oil. Moreover, the 10% oil diet and 10% oil enrichment produced significant (p < 0.05) performance when compared with the 5% and 10% fat enrichment dietary groups.
