Safety in Food Processes

Some general ideas about accidents, confidence, audits and the opportunity to have good sleep at night after a long day, filled with responsible decisions: Safety can have some completely varying meanings to different people in different situations. Two examples in Germany in the last year have shown what basic safety could mean. Dust explosions ruined two milk dryer installations, even before the real production had started. In one case, the use of appropriate equipment would not have helped, because the reason for the explosion was outside the installation itself. It was caused by an installation worker during test runs. But knowing that dust explosions happen much more often than gas and liquid based explosions, one should start thinking about the equipment used in the silos, milling area or diluting device, not only in the milk industry. Appropriate level sensors, drives, lamps and all the other devices will make life more relaxed, being sure that there will be no cause of the igniting spark in this Zone 20 or 22 areas. The general danger is known by most people that are in charge of the installations, but in reality most silo plants look slightly different.
