Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has targeted “green diesel” as the latest pathway for sustainable aviation fuels, citing significant production capacity that would bring wholesale costs down to $3 per gallon. However, technical experts say that green diesel could only be blended into conventional jet fuel at a ratio of 10% to maintain the integrity of the jet fuel specification. Boeing said that current green diesel production capacity in the US, Europe and Singapore could supply up to 1% — or some 600 million gallons — of worldwide commercial jet fuel demand. Green diesel is produced from oil and fats and is chemically different from biodiesel.
