A third pathway for producing alternative jet fuels has been approved by ASTM International, paving the way for Amyris and French Total to market production from their joint venture in Brazil to commercial airlines (JFI May5’14). Made from hydroprocessed fermented sugars and known as Synthesized Iso-Paraffinic (SIP) fuel, it should enable more widespread use of alternative fuels by commercial airlines in Brazil and elsewhere as the supply pool expands. SIP will be added as an annex to ASTM International standard D7566 — the specification for aviation fuel that contains synthesized hydrocarbons.
