Going against the trend toward scrapping taxes on fuel used for international flights, the regional Ontario government is proposing to increase its fuel levy for the first time since 1992 by 4 Canadian cents per liter (14 US￠ per gallon). The increase, from 2.7￠/liter currently, will be phased in over four years if the legislation is approved. Airlines in Canada already pay a 4￠/liter federal tax on fuel used in domestic flights with some regions charging an additional tax on domestic fuel and only rarely on international flights.
