The first trading day of 2014 saw a sharp fall in oil prices, ostensibly caused by the return of Libya’s giant El-Sharara oil field after a shut-in of more than two months. Benchmark ICE Brent lost more than $3 per barrel on Jan. 2 –-the largest one-day percentage fall since late June — with traders lamenting that “thin markets always mean big moves.”
