摘要

In this report the authors perform a magnetic disk friction test under a high vacuum and chemically evaluate the durability of the disks by monitoring lubrication oil and carbon overcoat decomposition gas with a mass spectrometer. As a result, they detected the breakage of the carbon overcoat at initial friction by monitoring the occurrence and behavior of fragment methane (fragment: CH{sub}3{sup}+) that originates in the carbon film. Furthermore, when they got data concerning disk location by using the methods of triboscopy, they were able to understand that initial breakage of the carbon film occurred at a specific location on the disk and spread to the entire disk.
