Emergencies in Obstetrics I - Hazards During Pregnancy

Obstetrical care is characterized by unpredictable and acute emergencies. Due to changes in physiology during pregnancy and the responsibility for the patient and the fetus, pregnant women are a special challenge for emergency teams. On the other hand the correct prehospital diagnosis, risk assessment and emergency treatment are of vital importance for the outcome of the mother and the unborn child. Gestational-hypertension associated diseases (pregnancy induced hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP syndrome), thromboembolic events and acute abdomen in pregnancy are in respect to frequency, severity and priority the most relevant conditions in emergency medicine. This review discusses prehospital diagnostic and treatment options to offer an effective approach to these emergencies for physicians inexperienced in obstetrical care.
