Caterpillar Inc. has introduced the first of what will be a new line of 3500 series natural gas-fueled generator sets. First to be launched is the 20-cylinder model G3520C, which will be followed by a G3316C in October and eventually by a G3512C gen-set. The G3520 engine itself is an 86 L, four-stroke, water-cooled gas engine with a 170 mm x 190 mm bore and stroke. The engine is designed to operate on low pressure gas, from 33 to 350 milibar, and can handle a variety of gas with methane numbers down to 70, without derating, Cat said. This is possible through the use of a new open combustion chamber design that eliminates the need for a precombustion chamber. The C engines also feature either jacket water cooling or separate circuit aftercooling.
