There is one interesting, often overlooked aspect in the use of aftertreatment filters. What happens at the end of a diesel particulate filter's life? Currently after a number of cleaning intervals the particulate filter is replaced with a new filter. This could change going into Euro 6 as diesel particulate filters (DPF) can be efficiently cleaned and returned to their original state for a much longer period of time. Thomas Loer, director of sales at Germany-based Puritech, explained that this possibility will totally shift the perspective of servicing aftertreatment devices. "Whereas now what happens to filters after they are installed in a vehicle is an aftermarket concern for the OEs. In the future it might become very interesting for the OEMs to take charge of filter cleaning." And the prospect seems indeed rather intriguing, considering that Puritech estimated that in Europe 10 000 filters will be cleaned every day by 2016.
