The power produced by combustion engines is often bought at the cost of vibration and noise in machinery and vehicles. Increasing demand for quieter and more comfortable vehicles and for low-vibration machinery is being acknowledged and countered by the industry, and innovative engine builders are coming to realize that straightforward functional testing of engines is no longer adequate. Responding to demands for quieter engines and engine-driven machinery, Medav GmbH, Uttenreuth, Germany, has developed acoustic analysis methods that also allow an assessment of assembly faults, damage and other abnormalities in combustion engines after a test period of just a few seconds. The system technology and testing methods are compatible with fully automated testing, and the accuracy and process reliability of the equipment - i.e., there are no pseudo faults - have been cited by light- and heavy-duty engine builders.
