Monte Carlo has such a glamorous ring about it. Sun, sea, mega yachts, cabriolets galore and the most famous Grand Prix circuit in the world. It was the perfect starting point for our long-distance first test of the Vauxhall Cascada. Except that it wasn't quite like that. Rain lashed down as we began a road trip back to Britain of almost 900 miles, and the first part of the journey was awash. So we set off, via Monaco's Casino Square, over the Basse Corniche, on Nice's Promenade des Anglais and circuiting Cap d'Antibes, with hood firmly sealed, seat heaters on and cabin kept cosy against the elements. Then we turned right at Golfe-Juan, where the Route Napoleon starts its twisty course all the way to Grenoble. Brown signs and roadside statues of the French Imperial Eagle mark the route that mostly follows the RN85, and what a route: just over 200 miles of driver's heaven, as sinuous as it is scenic. As we headed into the Alps, the sun came out, and the Cascada's motorised top came down. From shut to open it takes 1 7 seconds, and there was no need to stop - you can do it on the move at up to 30mph. Just as well with so many miles to cover. There is also a four-window switch that lets you motor all the side glass up or down in four seconds either way.
