摘要

Pain is a very common but poorly understood phenomenon. As chronic pain - unlike acute pain - in most cases has no purpose, its existence is obscure [1,2] and there is only little scientific evidence of its mechanisms and effects [3], A modern consensus is that the brain and genes play a crucial role in chronification [4,5]. There is evidence that chronic pain is associated with depression [6-8] and low quality of life [1,4,9]. There is also some evidence that chronic pain may even change the structure of the brain [10,11], which can result in serious functional impacts, such as antinocicep-tion [9] and cognitive impairments [10]. The prevalence of chronic pain in Finnish adults is about 20 %, with treatment costs totaling 600 million euros per year [12].
