Generators' Appetite to Finance Pipeline Capacity: New England and South Australia

An analysis of why New England gas-fired generators rely on interruptible pipeline capacity and similar generators in South Australia reserve firm capacity finds that these alternative approaches are explained by differences in weather, the availability of alternative fuels, and electricity market incentives. The comparison reveals that, despite some perceptions to the contrary, New England's gas and pipeline market appears to function well.
