Gas Atacama to Develop US$250M Mejillones LNG

Chilean-based Gas Atacama intends to invest US$250 million to develop Chile's third LNG regas terminal near Mejillones, BNAmericas reported Aug. 24. "We concluded that for us it would be advantageous to have a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU)," Rudolf Araneda, Gas Atacamas managing director, said. The FSRU will be located 2km off the coast and be connected to the company's 780MW Central Termica Atacama thermo power plant via an underwater pipeline. The power will be used to meet the growing demands of mining companies in the region. See Figure 1.
