For a long time, the cerebellum has been known for its importance in motor learning and coordination. Anecdotal case reports based on description of patients with cerebellar lesions (such as strokes or tumours) have moved progressively towards the hypothesis that the cerebellum could play a critical role in higher cognitive functioning such as attention, memory and learning, executive control, language, and visuospatial functions.
