The Effect of Gargling with a Povidone-iodine Preparation (Isodine~R Gargle) on Oral Bacteria

Objectives: In chronic respiratory tract diseases, indigenous bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae are known to colonize the lower respiratory tract, resulting in repeated lower respiratory tract infections, Gargling with povidone-iodine may prevent the relapse of lower respiratory tract infections by eradicating these pathogenic bacteria. In clinical situations, Isodine~R Gargle (a povidone-iodine gargle) is used for the prevention and treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, but its usefulness remains to be elucidated. Here we investigated the effect of gargling with Isodine Gargle on the indigenous oral bacteria in elderly people.
