The business systems in use at our facility, the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) are aging. Most of them were developed 20 years ago in Software AG's Adabas environment Adabas is a linked-list database that is very efficient, but also fairly proprietary Al though we store the majority of the business information in an integrated database, we had to access it through stovepipe applications. This made it difficult for the users to obtain integrated access to data. In addition, we acquired a procurement application that uses VSAM files to store data, making integrated access to the legacy systems even more difficult. Starting in the mid-1990s, we launched an initiative to improve the reporting capabilities of the legacy business systems. The work of this initiative has evolved into a reporting system referred to as the Business Decision Support Information System (BDSIS).
