The reaction of 2, 3-dihydro-1, 3-diisopropyl-4, 5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (5) with CO_2 gives the imidazolium-2-carboxylate 6. The compound can be transformed into the salts of its corresponding Broenstedt acid 8. The cationic acid chloride 10a is obtained from 6 and thionyl chloride. Chemical properties and spectroscopic data indicate 6 to be less basic than its anionic counterparts. e. g. PhCO_2~-. The X-ray structure of 6 is reported.
