Reaction of the 1,3-diamine 1 with the methylester of N,N-dimethyl-L-phenylalanine 2 afforded the chiral cylic amidine 4 with a pyridine substituent. The CuCl2 complex of the hydrochloride of ligand 4 has the structure of a trigonal bipyramide. In the Cu-catalyzed cyclopropanation of styrene with ethyl diazoacetate the new multi-nitrogen ligand gave optical inductions up to 15% ee. [References: 8]
