Starch and starch derivatives in technical applications.

Many new applications for starch and starch derivatives have emerged as a result of the increase in demand for natural, biodegradable raw materials. In synthetic polymer chemistry, for example, there has been a tendency towards incorporation of natural components into polymer matrices. Due to its stability and polyfunctionality, sorbitol is a suitable building block for the synthesis of polyurethanes, melamine resins and alkyd resins. Glucose syrups have shown potential as functional components ofconstruction chemicals. Glucose syrups are also used as retarding agents in concrete, which allow delayed setting under severe process conditions. During the construction of tiles and bricks, glucose syrups are added as plasticizers to reduce cracking and deformation of the clay mass. Partial replacement of urea resins with glucose syrups in particleboards results in simplified manufacturing procedures and reduced formaldehyde liberation.
