The year 2000 has a special place in the history of Hungary. As we step into the new millennium, our nation is celebrating a number of important historic events: the millennial anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian state, the nation's adoption of Christianity and the coronation of King St. Istvan, the founder of our state. It has been a thousand years since the Hungarian nation became a member of the family of European states, establishing itself in the Carpathian basin. At present, saying farewell to a century full of turbulent events, we are preparing to become acknowledged members of a Europe under re-organisation; the European Community. Our goals are identical. We are dismantling the geographical and political boundaries that separate nations, so that only ethnographic boundaries may indicate the fact that our continent is inhabited by people of different mother tongues and cultural heritage. Fifteen nations of the European Community have already started the work of building the future; now, we Hungarians are asking for admittance into the European House.
