Yield Response of Hydroponic Tomato Plants Grown from Rooted Cuttings of Lateral Shoots of Different Ecotypes

This experiment was carried our to investigate the yield response of tomato plants grown from rooted cuttings of lateral shoots of different ecotypes in hydroponic culture. The growth characteristics and yield responses of cherry tomato 'Pepe' and large tomato 'Momotaro' were compared. Mixed substrate with carbonized rice hull and perlite (1:1, v/v) was used. Standard Yamazaki nutrient solution (N, 7; P, 2; K, 4; Ca, 3; Mg, 2 me centre dot L~(-1)) recommended for culture of tomato plant was used. ECand pH were adjusted 1.2 to 2,0 dS centre dot m~(-1) and 5.5 to 7.0, respectively. For summer culture, cutting plants of 'Pepe' grown for 21 days in a greenhouse were practiced on Aprif 8, 1995 and then transplanted. Seeds were sawn on March 11, 1995 and the seedlings were transplanted after 48 days. The cutting plants were grown both main stem and two-sterns derived from near to the first cluster. The seedlings were grown as main stem. For winter culture cuttings were practiced on October 10, 1996 andcuttings for 21 days and then transplanted. Seeds were sown on September 6, 1996 and the seedlings were transplanted after 56 days. 'Pepe' and 'Momotaro' were harvested up to 7 and 5 clusters, respectively. In summer culture of 'Pepe', number of branches, total length of branch cluster, number of fruits, and fruit weight were greatly increased in cutting plants, especially at two-stem culture. In winter culture, plant growth was not significant different in cutting and seedling plants. Number of fruitsand fruit weight per plants of 'Pepe' were higher in cuttings than in seedlings, but fruit weight of 'Momotaro' was not significantly different. Soluble solids content and titratable acidity were higher in "Pepe' than in 'Momotaro', but the reverse tendency was found in fruit firmness. No significant differences were shown in soluble solids content titratable acidity, and fruit firmness both in cuttings and seedlings regardless of different ecotypes. These results demonstrated that using cutting plantsof lateral shoot is saving the seed cost regardless of different ecotypes of hydroponic ally grown tomato plants in this experiment.
