Heritage bodies are working to attack the causes of decline in parks and historic sites. English Heritage tells us that an alarming 15 per cent of Capability Brown parks, including Stowe in Buckinghamshire, are now golf courses and nearly halt of allGrade I listed parks in Yorkshire were subject to planning applications in 2003. What is reassuring is that the non-departmental government body, which launched its second Heritage Counts report last week, is quantifying the country's historic environment, with a view to preserving it through educating and informing the Government and the public that heritage does indeed matter.
