Steel city takes pride in a greener future

Geoff Sawyer visits Sheffield, the industrial city winning praise for its regeneration, driven by the city council, the lottery and its local people. Don't tell them at Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday, but the colour of the city is green. The grim image of a steel-making city has gone forever. Steel and cutlery are still made there, but Sheffield is now putting more emphasis on parks and open spaces. From the centre outwards, the city council is making Sheffield a more attractive place to live, work and visit. It is backed by local and national businesses and, most importantly, ordinary people. With more than 170 parks, woods, sports grounds and open spaces within its boundaries, the council is confident that Sheffield is one of the greenest cities in Britain. Alongside the greening policy, run complementary schemes of waste recycling, cleaner air, litter-free streets and graffiti and chewing gum removal. There is also a waste disposal system that burns rubbish and supplies heat to many buildings in the city centre.
