摘要

In New Zealand, the kiwi is king. It is the name for a large, flightless, fuzzy brown bird, as well as a small, fuzzy br&wn fruit. Like the apple in the Unites States, kiwis are part of the national identity of New Zealanders. They are one of New Zealand's top export crops and a fixture in backyard gardens throughout the island nation. In North America, however, while they are adored as a sweet and tangy ingredient in fruit salads, they remain fairly obscure as horticultural specimens. This is a bitsurprising given that they are exquisitely ornamental plants that produce bushels of fruit with little trouble from pests or disease. Plus, kiwis ripen in November and December, when mostother fruits are but a memory summer.
