Tips for Window Greenhouses through the Seasons

Up until a few years ago, I owned and loved my own 10 by l8 ft. full-size greenhouse, which my husband built on a patio attached to our garage. My plants won ribbons every year at the Botanic Gardens in Glencoe, Ill. We sold our big, old house, and the greenhouse went with it. I have had my window greenhouse for several years now, and I find it almost as rewarding as the big one I left. I do find some differences in the care of plants in this lesser space. There is a tendency to pack as many plants as possible into this limited area. Quite often this leads to problems such as powdery mildew, which will spread very quickly unless discovered soon enough. The infected plant should be removed immediately, and the remaining plants should be rearranged so that there is plenty of air circulation around them. The infected plants should be isolated and sprayed with a fungicide. If done soon enough, the plants can be saved.
