Soil physical constraints of major soils of Ramnad district of Tamil Nadu

Plant nutrient availability in soil is a measure of soil fertility, while the soil physical environment is the kingpin which regulates the retention and movement of soil moisture, aeration, nutrient movement, soil temperature, seed germination, rootpenetration etc. Hence the soil physical environment or soil physical fertility directly or indirectly controls all the factors that influence the production potential of the crops. More frequently the soil health is infected with soil physical constraints which impair the crop growth to a greater extent (Bharambe et al. 1999, Chella et al. 2000). Hence to identify the physical constraints associated with the soils of Ramnad district, a detailed soil survey was carried out during 2000-2001.
