The last decade has seen major strides in the development of processes and equipment which willhave a great influence on the way in which industrial heat treatment is conducted into the 21stcentury. Numerous advances in atmosphere and vacuum heat treatment technology are leading to thetransition of furnaces into heat treatment machines capable of being totally integrated intomanufacturing lines. This two-part paper reviews these advances, concentrating initially onatmosphere processing.
