摘要

Both Presidential candidates are beginning to spotlight their HEP views on innovation and science/technology issues, and to make campaign promises - some general, some more specific. The American Association for the Advancement of Science has set up a Web site carrying news of developments (http:// election2008.aaas.org).In answering 14 questions on competitiveness, energy, health, education, water, space, and IT put forward by the ScienceDebate organization (www.sciencedebate2008.com), the two candidates both pledge their support for spotlighting science and engineering. Pertaining most to materials scientists and engineers: Senator Obama specifically promises to "increase funding for basic research in physical and life sciences, mathematics, and engineering at a rate that would double basic research budgets over the next decade." He weaves strong support for STEM education through most of his responses.
