IIRSM conference: The innovation game

Seven, "nudging eight" for safety, but only five for health, is how the HSE's chief executive Richard Judge summed up the improvements made in health and safety in the 40 years since the founding of both the HSE and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM). Opening IIRSM's ninth annual conference in association with Health and Safety at Work, Judge offered this rating in response to a question by IIRSM president Siobhan Donnelly. Earlier in his presentation, he had provided an insider's view of the regulator's thinking on how its new strategy, which was later released on 29 February, can help the economy grow. "There are an awful lot of [small and medium sized enterprises] across the UK and they are a growing population," he told conference delegates on 11 February. "If we can get our support right, indirectly we are helping the growth of the economy, because actually the engine room for much of the growth in the economy will be in small and medium sized enterprises."
