H&S adviser jailed for trench death

A health and safety consultant who allowed labourers to flout his safe method of work has been jailed after one of them was crushed to death while excavating a basement. Richard Gold-ing was sentenced to nine months for breaching Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act. The owner of the firm managing the works, Conrad Sidebot-tom, was convicted of gross negligence manslaughter and jailed for three years. HSE inspector Dominic Long said Sidebottom had been on site on the morning of the incident and must have seen the unsafe conditions without halting the work.
