Sharp corner steers park owner to court

A THEME park owner has landed fines and costs of 94 000 pounds after an all-terrain truck rolled over and plunged passengers into a river. Riggsed, which runs the Diggerland theme park in Durham, was fined 75 000 pounds and ordered to pay 19 000 pounds costs for failing to ensure the safety of passengers and the 17-year-old driver. Three two-year-old children were among 18 passengers on the ride on 13 April 2004 when it fell down a ravine into the River Browney. The two-part all-terrain Supertrack ride - based on a modified Hagglund BV206 military vehicle normally used for troop movements - failed to negotiate a sharp right corner on its route down the riverbank descent and went over the edge. It slid about eight feet down a steep bank, landing on its side in the shallow river. One five-year-old child suffered a crushed ankle and a woman sustained three broken ribs.
