LASTING 15 minutes, this training programme provides an introduction to the hazards of workplace noise, including noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. It also shows how noise can distract people from other hazards, such as moving vehicles. The programme explains how high and prolonged noise levels can permanently damage hearing, and dramatises the social isolation that someone with industrial deafness may suffer. It gives an overview of how to carry out a noise assessment and summarises the main noise control measures that employers should consider. The film places particular emphasis on personal moulded hearing protectors, pointing out that though these are much dearer than disposable ear plugs, they offer superior comfort and protection, people are more likely to wear them, and they may be more cost-effective in the long run when the true cost of disposables is considered. The film also gives good examples of simple rule-of-thumb tests that can be used to decide whether you need a full noise assessment, including actual noise measurement.
