IN JANUARY, officers from the Gangmasters Licensing Authority questioned 80 migrant vegetable pickers in Cornwall and found, among other things, that they were being paid below the minimum wage and illegally charged for gloves and other protective equipment by the gangmasters who rented them out. This was just the latest in a string of events spotlighting the insecurity of migrant workers that had as its worst example the deaths of 21 Chinese cockle pickers who drowned in Morecambe Bay in 2004.
